Tebajjukira Health and Empowerment Network (THEN) was founded in 2024 to honor the legacy of Josephine Tebajjukira, a dedicated traditional midwife who devoted her life to supporting expectant and new mothers. With unwavering commitment and expertise, she provided essential pre-and postnatal care, becoming a trusted figure in the community. Her selfless service offered guidance, reassurance, and hands-on support during one of the most critical moments in a mother’s life.
The name Tebajjukira (Teh-bah-joo-kee-rah), meaning “ if we do not remember our past, we can never pay it forward” highlights the tendency to overlook traditional midwives’ sacrifices despite their vital role in maternal and child health. For over five decades, Josephine trained and mentored young midwives, preserving traditional knowledge while integrating modern medical practices to enhance maternal care. Today, many of her trainees continue to serve communities in Masaka District.
Josephine Tebajjukira’s commitment extended beyond midwifery to advocate tirelessly for women’s empowerment, children’s education, and community development. Inspired by her unwavering service, THEN remains dedicated to perpetuating her mission of delivering comprehensive healthcare to underserved populations in Masaka District. Her legacy embodies the values of compassion, resilience, and leadership, which will inspire our future endeavors.
Tebajjukira Health and Empowerment Network (THEN), established in 2024, is committed to providing high-quality, holistic, and accessible healthcare to communities in Buwunga and Kyannamukaaka counties of Masaka.
